Claude Team free for a year: how to apply to Anthropic's startup program

On October 6, Anthropic expanded its startup program, Claude Startups. If your company qualifies, you get a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats, $1,000 in API credits and up to $45K in offers from other companies. The headline sounds like a gift, and for the most part it is. Before recommending it, I read the whole program page, its terms, the benefits addendum and the subscription offer conditions. Here is what I found: what is included, who qualifies, how to apply, and the fine print worth reading before you click.

What exactly is included

There are five pieces, and they are not worth the same to every business:

  • A free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats. Claude Team is Claude's plan for teams of 2 to 150 people. A Premium seat costs $100 a month billed annually ($125 billed monthly) and includes Claude Code, the tool you use to build sites, internal systems and automations from your computer. Five seats for a year add up to $6,000 at the annual list price.
  • $1,000 in API credits. The API is how you connect Claude to your website, your CRM or your automations, and it is pay as you go. Note that these credits are not for the chat; they are for what you build. Members who receive the credits also get higher API rate limits.
  • Up to $45K in offers from other companies, which Anthropic calls the Claude Startup Stack. For example: 25% off your first year of Gamma Pro annual, 12 months free plus 33 million characters on ElevenLabs, or three months of Granola Business free for up to 10 seats.
  • Office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team, as 45-minute live sessions.
  • Founder events. Some are in person, like the Founder House in San Francisco, and others you can watch online.

If your startup is backed by one of the venture capital firms in Anthropic's partner network, it can get up to $100K in additional API credits, claimed through that firm. If you do not have that kind of funding, that is fine: the rest of the program does not require it.

Does your company qualify?

The official requirements are short and specific:

The four requirements
1
A young company
Founded in the last 5 years, or funded in the last 2. Bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed companies are all welcome.
2
A Claude Console account
Anthropic's developer console, at platform.claude.com.
3
An email on your website's domain
Your company email has to match your website's domain. A Gmail address does not meet this requirement.
4
A short description
What you are building and for whom, in a few lines.

Two more conditions do not make the headline. The first is location: your company has to be somewhere Claude is available. Panama is on Anthropic's official list of supported countries and regions; Venezuela and Cuba are not. On top of that, the program terms exclude companies established or operating in a list of countries that includes Cuba, Russia, Iran, China and North Korea, or that plan to offer Anthropic's services to people located there.

The second: you have to comply with Anthropic's supportability policies, and the decision on who gets in is theirs alone. Nobody can guarantee you will be approved.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Create your Claude Console account with your company email.
  2. Fill out the application from the program page, with a short, clear description of what you are building and for whom.
  3. Wait for the email. According to Anthropic, most applications are decided within minutes; the rest go to a manual review that usually takes 2 to 3 business days.
  4. Claim your benefits. If you are approved, you get an email with a link to the Claude Startups page inside the console. You sign in there to activate the Team year and claim your credits.

The fine print

This is the part to read slowly. None of it is a trap, but these details separate the companies that make the most of the program from the ones that end up with a surprise.

  • The free year only applies if your company never had Team. The page says it plainly: only organizations that are new to Team qualify. If you already pay for it, you do not get it for free.
  • The credits expire six months after you receive them, and they only work on Anthropic's own API through Claude Console. They cannot be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or other platforms.
  • The partner offers do not come from Anthropic. Each company provides its own offer under its own terms, and Anthropic does not guarantee them. Each one can be redeemed once, is non-transferable, has no cash value and cannot be shared outside your company. And "up to $45K" is the sum of all of them: they are only worth something if you were going to use those tools anyway.
  • Your brand may become public. By accepting, you allow Anthropic to use your company's name and logo to identify you as a selected company and customer. You also agree to consider in good faith any request for a quote from one of your executives or for joint marketing.
  • Taxes are on you. The terms say the credits may have different tax implications than cash, and that each company is responsible for checking that in its own country. If in doubt, ask your accountant.
  • Anthropic can change or end the program at any time, and the terms are governed by California law, with San Francisco as the venue for any dispute.
What the headline says

A free year of Claude Team, $1,000 in credits and up to $45K in offers.

What the fine print says

Only if your company is new to Team. Credits expire after six months and only work on Anthropic's API. The offers come from other companies. Your name and logo may be made public. Taxes are yours. And when the year ends, check whether the plan renews.

What nobody tells you: what happens when the year ends

The program page does not explain what happens to your Team plan after twelve months. The closest thing Anthropic publishes is its general terms for subscription offers, effective May 12, 2026. They say that, unless the offer states otherwise, if you do not cancel before the offer period ends, the plan automatically continues as a paid subscription at the then-current standard price, charged to your payment method. That is why those offers ask for a valid payment method to activate.

I do not know whether the program's Team year works the same way, because the page does not say. But if it does, five Premium seats would cost $6,000 a year billed annually, or $625 a month billed monthly, at today's prices. My practical advice:

  • When you activate it, read carefully whatever the console shows you about renewal.
  • Put a reminder in your calendar two weeks before the year is up.
  • Decide in time how many seats are worth paying for. Under those same terms, you can cancel from Settings, under Billing, and if you cancel during the offer period you keep access until it ends.

What I would do with the free year

In my companies I use Claude Code every day: it is how we build sites, internal systems and automations. If your company qualifies, I would not let the year go by just "trying things out":

  • Give the five seats to the people who produce, not to whoever has the biggest title: marketing, sales and operations.
  • Give each of them a concrete project from month one: your website, your CRM, your content or a process you still do by hand.
  • Use the API credits before month six on one or two automations that make a visible difference, like getting every form on your site straight to your WhatsApp or answering repeat questions automatically. If you are not sure where to start, I wrote about the five processes worth automating first.
  • Document everything with instructions your team can repeat (skills, in Claude's vocabulary), so what you build keeps working after the year ends.

And if your team has never really used AI, five seats without training will just sit there. I explained why in why AI training for your team is now mandatory.

The requirement that stops many: an email on your own domain

If your business still runs on a Gmail address, it is not enough for this program: they ask for a company email on the same domain as your website. If you do not have a website or your own domain yet, that is step one.

At my in-person AI workshop on Saturday, October 17 in Panama (delivered in Spanish), you leave with your website live on your own domain, which is the foundation for that email. The workshop requires Claude on the $20 a month plan at minimum; if your company qualifies for this program, Team Premium seats include Claude Code, which is exactly what we use that day. There are 10 seats, by selection. And if you would rather train your whole team, get in touch.

I checked all of this on October 7, 2026, on Anthropic's official pages. Programs change, so confirm the conditions on the program page before you apply.

Does your company qualify? Tell me what you would build first with five seats of Claude Code: your website, your CRM or your automations.
