Opus 5 and Kimi K3's Open Weights: The Week Frontier AI Stopped Being a Luxury

Two announcements, three days apart

This week two things happened that, together, close a chapter. On July 24 Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5, and on July 27 Moonshot opens the weights of Kimi K3, the largest open model in history. Apart, they are two tech headlines. Together they tell a much bigger story, and this time it hits your wallet.

Two weeks ago I wrote that Fable 5, the priciest model on the market, was split in two under competitive pressure. This is the next chapter, and it is sharper. Frontier AI just stopped being a luxury.

Opus 5: almost Fable 5's intelligence, at half the price

The number that matters: on the independent Artificial Analysis ranking, Opus 5 debuted in first place with the highest score they have ever recorded. And it did it costing $5 per million input tokens and $25 output, exactly half of what Fable 5 costs, the model that until yesterday was the ceiling of the market.

Read the fine print: the five best models in the world are separated by 5 points. The race for "the smartest" has basically tied at the top. And when intelligence levels off, the fight moves elsewhere: to price, and to where your data lives.

Price is where it all got decided

Here is the real move. Look at what frontier AI cost two weeks ago versus what it costs today.

Price per million tokens (input / output)
Kimi K3
$3 / $15
open, self-hostable
Opus 5
$5 / $25
#1 in intelligence
GPT-5.6 Sol
$5 / $30
coding leader
Fable 5
$10 / $50
yesterday's ceiling

Read it slowly. Opus 5 delivers the best intelligence on the market at half the price of Fable 5, which scores essentially the same. Anthropic itself left its most expensive model in an awkward spot: why pay double for a one-point difference? The answer is that Fable is now for very specific cases, and Opus 5 becomes the everyday model. When a company competes against itself by cutting the price, it is because competition outside is pressing hard.

Kimi K3 opens its weights: the frontier can now live at home

On July 27, Moonshot releases the weights of Kimi K3: the model file, downloadable, so any company can run it on its own infrastructure. I explained it in depth here, but the core point is this: with the API, your data always travels to someone else's servers. With open weights, for the first time, a near-frontier model can run without a single piece of data leaving your building.

Put the two announcements together and you see the whole map: elite intelligence became cheap (Opus 5) and, in its open version, even sovereign (Kimi). The argument that "good AI is a luxury I cannot afford" ended this week.

What happens to each player

The board, after this week
Opus 5
Takes the crown in overall intelligence and redefines price downward. It is the new benchmark for everyone.
Fable 5
Left in an awkward spot: double the price for almost the same intelligence as its little brother. Its place now is the hardest, most specific work.
GPT-5.6
Still the king of pure code (leads SWE-bench at 96.2%). If your business lives on software, it is still in the conversation.
Kimi K3
The cheapest, #1 in frontend code, and now the only frontier you can host yourself. The data-sovereignty card.

One honest caveat, the same one I repeat in every analysis: Opus 5 leading overall intelligence does not make it the best at everything. GPT-5.6 still leads pure software engineering, and Kimi rules frontend code and the ability to run without leaving home. The question is never which model is best. It is which one is best for each of your processes.

What this means for your business

The question changed
You used to ask
Can I afford good AI?
Now you ask
Which one do I run in each process, and where does my data live?

This is the big news for any company: the barrier to entry fell. You no longer need a giant's budget to use the best AI in the world. What you need now is judgment: knowing which model goes in each process, how much each one costs you and how much it earns you, and an operation orderly enough to switch providers when the market moves again, because it will.

My position has been the same for a month, and this week validates it for the fourth time: portfolio, not flag. Providers will keep fighting over your bill, and every time they do, you win, as long as you have the judgment to take advantage of it. The edge is no longer having access to the best AI. Everyone has it. The edge is knowing how to use it.

That judgment, how to choose the right model for each process and build an operation that does not depend on a single provider, is exactly what I have been preparing to teach in an in-person workshop. If you want to be among the first to know when it opens, let's talk, or join the waitlist here (the workshop will be held in Spanish).
